Notes - I believe Frederick & Dorothea Schultz took in Theodore Hinzmann as a child. Frederick Schultz is the son of Christopher & Mary Schultz. Theodore's brother Carl and sister Julia are nextdoor in the 1870 census. My best guess is Frederick & Dorothea Schultz were just a young, childless couple kind enough to take in and care for 3 orphans. This also assumed step-mother Dorothea either died as did her husband or she abandoned the children, which I doubt..
See Schultz_Hinzmann_NY.xlsx spreadsheet for data from and links to 1853 Hamburg & NY passanger list, 1860, 1865, 1870, 1875, and 1880 US and NY census for Friedrich Wilhelm Theodore Schultz (born 4 Nov 1827 Poischendorf, Mecklenburg, Germany, died between 1870-1875 Niagara Co. NY, RIN 1754) and Anna Dorothea Magdelina Wilken (born 1817 Grevsmuelen, Mecklenburg, Germany, died after 1880, RIN 1759).
Note 1865 NY census for Royalton, Niagara Co. (page 71) show Fred and Dora living with Fred's parents Christopher and Mary. No children listed.
-------
NOTE: The marriage of Friedrich Wilhelm Theodore Schultz (RIN 1754) and Anna Dorothea Magdalena Wilken (RIN 1759) known as MRIN 641 are considered as adopative parents but MRIN 641 is unlinked to Theodor Carl Friedrich Hinzmann (RIN 4024) because the DftCom2 program does not handle adoptive parents correctly.
----
I have assumed that the Fredrick and Dora Schultz that appear with Theodore Hinzmann in the 1870 census adopted him and he eventually took the Schultz name. He was married as Hinzmann. Some of his children were baptized as Hinzmann. I have no idea when or why he changed the surname of the entire family.
-----
In the 1920 census states he was naturalized in 1875. He would have been only 17.
I could not find any naturalization papers for either a Theodore Hinzmann or Theodore Schultz.
I did find a 22 Oct 1875 naturalization for a Frederick Schultz witnessed by Frederick Schultz 2nd and John Reno of Royalton.
I also found a 7 Jul 1873 declaration of Intent by Frederick Schultz, age 37 (1873-37=1836)
In 1870 census where Theodore Hinchman is living with Frederick & Dora Schultz, Frederick is 44 (1870-44=1826)
If Frederick Schultz did adopt Theodore Hinzmann could Theodore's naturalization be considered the naturalization of his adopted father? It should also be noted that the Declaration of Ientent birth year for Friedrich conflicts with the 1870 census.

From 6/9/10 email from Ron Cary, Deputy Niagara County Historian:
The only Lutheran Church in North Ridge is St. Peter's, for which we have records. There is a death in October for a Theodore Schulz (Hinzmann). He died of cancer. He was buried in the church cemetery.
This provided the link between the Schultz and Hinzmann surnames as well as the cause of death.

A 4/19/2011 review of FHL # 0903054 Niagara Co. NY Guardianship index, A-Z 1830-1972 yielded nothing. Checked for Hinzmann/Hinsmann as well as Schultz.

From Debi Perry (see Sep,Oct, etc 2011 email):
"I also have a handwritten family history of the Harch descendents by Luella Schultz Quintern. She is the daughter of Dorothea Louise Harch and William Schultz, granddaughter of Johann L Harch and Mary Mueller. Julia (Hinzmann) would have been her aunt."
Excerpt from this handwritten family history:
Julia was born in the German state of Mickelenburg. When she was about 14 years old, following the death of her mother, she together with her father, sister and two young brothers set sail for the United States. During the 6 week voyage her father became ill and died. He was buried at sea. The children, Julia, Dora, Carl and 3 year old Theodore landed at the New York Harbor. They traveled up the Hudson River and the Erie Barge Canal by boat and then by wagon to Wolcottsville to join other German families who had settled there. The responsibility of caring for a baby brother was too great for the young girls alone so Theodore was adopted by a family named Schultz who lived nearby. He was brought up as their own son and took their name. He married a woman named Hanna from Ransomville, they had 8 children. Carl Hinzman worked as a farm hand until he contracted typhoid fever and died in Orleans County. Dora married a man named Hollenbeck and moved to Gloversville, New York.
