Notes - Birth location could be either Barren Co. or Hardin Co., Kentucky. Tax records show his father in Barren Co. from 1812 to 1815 and Hardin Co. from 1819 to 1828. Exactly where he was from 1816-1818 is not know.
I picked Hardin Co. assuming he had left Barren Co. and just not yet have settled in Hardin Co. yet.
Birth year varies per source
c1850 b abt 1818
c1860 b abt 1815
c1870 b abt 1818
c1880 b abt 1816
I chose to use 1818

"History of Miami Co. IN" pg 117 has him marrying Nancy White in 1841. My take is it might be true since a 7 year old child Mary White shows up with James in c1850, 17 year of Sarah J. White in c1860. This infers to me some kind of connection to the White family. Maybe Nancy's sister?
I added a marriage to Nancy White with her dying sometime before the 1850 census was enumerated on 28 Oct 1850.
---
I had James marrying Samantha bef 28 Oct 1850 in Miami Co. Marriage location as assumption on my part.
Many have Samantha's surname as Hartlerode. Besides a Charlotte Hartlerode living with James and Samantha in c1870 I could not other evidence this being Samantha's surname. It might be true, but more proof required as far as I'm concerned.
The following article was noted. It's possible the Samantha Hartlerode who married 6 Mar 1877 was named after Samantha, the wife of James Wilhelm.

H. P. Loveland stole a march on his friends and was married without their knowledge, on the 6th inst., to Samantha Hartlerode, of Xenia. The marriage took place at the residence of Mrs. Jas. Wilhelm in this city, Rev. W. L. Huffman performing the ceremony. The wedded pair reĀmained all night at Mr. Willielm's and next morning returned to their home at Xenia, where we hope they will be happy and prosperous.

I assumed he died sometime after the 1880 census was enumerated 28 Jun 1880 in the same location as the 1880 census.

Item 1: His headstone says James Willhelm, died December 16, 1892, aged 75 years, 7 months, 16 days.
Item 2: Starke County, IN Probate Record: James Wilhelm, Case #249- Jefferson Wilhelm, administrator - Date of Letter is listed as December 16, 1891.
Note:
- Jefferson is unusual given name. James did have a brother Jefferson that did live until 1899. So I am assuming the estate notice is for our James Wilhelm.
- Estate notice year conflicts with tombstone year (letters of admin 1891, tombstone 1892)
- Birth date based on age at 1891 death about 30 May 1816
- Birth date based on age at 1892 death about 30 May 1817.
I went with death on 30 May 1817 in Starke Co. - [S38] 1850 Federal Census.
