A John Cowan that died in Chester Co. SC in 1837 names a child William in his will. Trees can be found stating this William was born 1789, close to the 1850 census birth year of 1787 for William A. Cowan. The same trees state he married a Martha McFadden.

I have eliminated this John Cowan as being William A. Cowan's father since the John Cowan estate expenditures contain the entry "28 Nov 1838 - By cash paid John Simpson for coffin for Wm Cowan $2.00". This infers to me that the William, son of John Cowan in Chester Co. SC died about 28 Nov 1838. Therefore, I have eliminated John Cowan of Chester SC as the father of William A. Cowan.

An Andrew Cowan died about 7 Apr 1789 in Abbeville Co. 96th district. He had a son William mentioned in his will, but no Joseph. The will does not infer William was a minor that required a guardian.

I have eliminated Andrew Cowan as being William A. Cowan's father because it appears the William Cowan mentioned in the will was not a minor plus the fact Joseph was not mentioned either.

      -----
An Samuel Cowan in Abbeville Co. wrote will 12 Dec 1851 (proven/DOD unknown). Mentions son William Nixon Cowan. No mention of a Joseph.

I have eliminated Samuel Cowan because son named William Nixon, not William A.

A John Cowan died 22 Jun 1805 in Abbeville Co. Mentions a mother Ann Cowan, brothers William and Issac Cowan, and two brother-in-laws.

Doubtful because William Cowan would have had to be of age by 1805. Plus their is no mention of Joseph.
